Howdy,
Quick update here.
Yesterday was survival. Dropped on first climb (which was very hard,) chased solo for long time, as catching the group, felt Navi vibration, so went to team car. Wearing super gloves so can't reach in pocket. Grabbed onto car, while the doc reached back to see I was at 133 dropping. Drank a coke, went through the cars to get back in. Officials saw that, and dq'd me, but after hearing why, re-instated. Thanks for the understanding!!!
Then I went on to eat, and eat, and eat. I calculated eating about 340gms of carbs over the course of the day, and at the end still finished at 91. I came off the back on the second climb, then chased through the cars to get back on, and then sat as close to the front as I could for the last 80km's or so. Feeling good until last bit, when I not eating enough got me too low, and was out of fuel. I have eaten tons since then, and am about to go give it another go.
Did 11u Lantus last night, down from 19u at the start. Woke up at 6:20 at 240, did 3u Apidra, and stuffed as much food down my throat as possible. Right now, I am 145 trending up, and gotta run hop on the Team Bus.
Thanks so much for the comments, and well wishes. Today is going to be hard, but sunny, and I plan to make it to the end.
Have a great day.

good to hear you're still in it! rock on.
Saw a picture of you riding with Hincapie, Boonen, Danielson, and Vandevelde. You belong. Keep riding and never give up.
We are cheering you on. Keep pedaling!
You are truly an inspiration! I heard a commentator discussing how hard it was for the riders to keep eating, keep their energy up etc. etc. and it made me think of how much harder you guys with diabetes have to work. You are amazing.
Hey Phil, am following along and am so impressed ,as always. You are an amazing ispiration to everyone but Meghan is totally in awe as she follows along. We all love and miss you. Aunt Trisha
Phil,
I've noticed before that when I am super active (cycling fast or hiking mountains) it seems as though I can keep downing powerbars and cliffbars and the BS doesn't go up. It's like after a few hours of exercise, my metabolism just skyrockets. On one hiking trip, I was afraid of going low for the entire first half, and went through 6 or 7 powerbars, hovering around a bs of 100 the whole time. The second half of that hike, I decided to hold off eating more until I was actually under 70, which didn't happen. Maybe my islets weren't being killed off when I was that active, or maybe I was starving my cells but staying a constant bs, who knows. You should test it out in training some day and see if you actually need boosts of sugar when you are still above 100 or if it just stays level.
Keep up the good work! It's great to see other diabetics being so active and competing in professional events! How's the rest of the team holding up?
keep it going. Looks like you are adjusting and getting your tour legs. Web site says to expect snow...
Go Phil!! I am so impressed with your determinationa and tenacity. Keep up the good work!
Hey Phil
Been following the race and your progress. Whoa, a tough one eh?
Holy crap how much are you eating? Too much long acting on board? How does your food intake compare to Fabio, as well as to non Ds such as Matt?
It would be great to see a comparison of this - perhaps it is part of those studies underway.
Take care and keep resting as much as possible.
Amd thanks for paving the way for hanging onto cars!!!

Awesome! a true inspiration for all of us type 1. Hang on to the wheels of others, let them do the work. When you get that adrenaline rush, don't react right away, wait until it wears off and then kick it in. Works for me on the bike.
Go Phil Go!! -- stellasmom
You and Fabio should be unbelievably proud!! You have broken a major barrier and spread awareness under extreme circumstances. We are cheering you like crazy and say "Job well done!" It doesn't matter if you finish the race; starting it is what has inspired us all. Kids with Type 1 have a new set of role models in you guys and we D-moms are eternally grateful!! Thanks guys, now go rest! :-)
Go Phil!
Great job today!
Nice going today.
I have a pretty photo of you in Davis, CA.
How can I send it to you
You're still in the game Phil and Type 1 D is getting lots of attention. Simply incredible!! Keep on pushing the pedals as well as the boundaries!
Allez allez allez !
Ed and I are still following along and rooting for you, Phil! It's been so great to watch... We're so proud--I've been telling everyone about you and TT1. You are doing great!
Phil, It has been excellent following you in the race and I am so inspired by the great job that everyone on the team is doing, but especially you and Fabio. The way that you all have pushed your own limits is inspiring and will continue to pay off. It makes me so happy to see you guys racing, and succeeding, among a world-class group of riders. You should be very proud of yourself not only for your personal effort but for the team you and Joe put together.
Can't wait to see you guys in Paso Robles tomorrow! You guys are truly inspiring, thank you for everything you've done for bringing awareness about diabetes and athletes.
I've been watching the tour online every day and it's so exciting when the commentators take a few minutes just to talk about Team Type 1 and the challenge and dedication you guys face in dealing with competing at a professional level while managing diabetes.
P.S. I'll be sporting my signs for you and Fab whether or not you're racing tomorrow!!!
Bigworm told me to get over here and support TT1 so keep on digging deep, Tallahassee is proud of you!
Hi Phil
BT here, Amy T's husband. I rode out to Tunitas Creek on Monday to cheer for you guys, and I think I saw you. You guys are amazing -- I can only imagine how tough it has been. Get some rest -- you deserve it.
Phil - you're an inspiration no matter what! TdF in 2011!
